We have collection Chinese Export Porcelains over the years from both Christie's and Sothebys, and on 2 occasions from The Chinese Porcelain Company. We purchased from them and were told that the porcelains we were acquiring we not from the auction rooms, but rather from special private collectors who were selling to them. At the time I thought it odd and we have it in writing that the pieces were not sold at auction. In having our collection re-evaluated for insurance, the insurance company is now saying that they will not allow insurance for our inflated acquisition price. I am quite adamant in saying that we are annoyed and I have voiced our annoyance with other collectors; It has come to light that we are not the only collectors who have had this issue. If one is a serious collector, deal with the auctions rooms directly. This is the classic buyer beware story.
